Indoor Air Quality Basics for Northern Nevada Homes

Indoor air quality comes down to three levers: filtration (removing particles), ventilation (bringing in fresh air), and humidity control. In our dry, high-desert climate, smart filtration plus humidity management usually makes the biggest comfort difference.

Filtration: catching particles

Filters are rated by MERV. A higher MERV captures smaller particles, but a filter that's too restrictive for your system can choke airflow. The goal is the highest filtration your equipment is designed to handle — sometimes that means a dedicated media-filter cabinet rather than a thicker 1-inch filter.

Ventilation: fresh air, on purpose

Tighter, more efficient homes trap stale air. Controlled ventilation brings in measured fresh air without throwing away comfort, and exhaust fans in kitchens and baths remove moisture and pollutants at the source.

Humidity: the high-desert factor

Northern Nevada air is dry, especially in winter when heating runs. Very low humidity causes dry skin, static, and irritation; whole-home humidification can help. Done wrong, humidity control causes condensation problems — it should be matched to your home.

Whether humidification or additional filtration helps depends on your specific home and symptoms — we assess it on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

What MERV rating should I use?

Use the highest MERV your system is designed to handle without restricting airflow. Many homes do well in the MERV 8–13 range; very high-MERV filters may require a properly sized filter cabinet. We can confirm what your equipment supports.

Do air purifiers really help?

Whole-home solutions integrated with your HVAC generally outperform small portable units because they treat the air your system already moves. The right choice depends on your goals — allergens, odors, or general filtration.
